FALSE ALARMS

The installer/monitor and the user must know how to prevent them.

The biggest problem in monitoring alarm systems, whether its commercial or residential, are the false alarms.

The concept for monitoring alarms is simple: the equipment installed in some place, when detects some kind of problem through its sensors, emits a signal that is sent to the 24-hour monitoring center, who, depending on the case, calls the appropriate personal or competent organ to take the necessary actions and to solve the problem.

The false alarm happens when the alarm system wrongly detects a signal, sending it to the monitoring station, who will call the appropriate personal and the police, who will send a police car to the location. In this case, there will be a unnecessary use of a public organ, who could have been attending a real emergency during this time. This being, the false alarm emits a false police dispatch, a notification of a crime to the police without evidence of a criminal act.

A false alarm happens basically for 3 reasons: equipment problem, including bad quality and installation of the equipment; weather conditions and by the misuse of the user (inexperienced or mistake). 95% of the false alarms are caused by the users themselves.

The false alarms have as a major consequence the lack of credibility of the alarm system, threatening the image of the companies who work in this area, because either the new users or the competent authorities will have the wrong idea that the system does not work.

The electronic security systems have the function to prevent, they are installed to prevent or follow, when monitored, thefts, vandalism, robbery, fire, medical emergency, level of toxic chemicals or temperature, among others. Data given by monitoring centers show the efficiency of the systems: of every 100 tries of robbery in a location with an alarm system, 94% fail; the number of places robbed where there are no alarm systems is three times bigger and the number of items robbed in a place with no alarm system is 10 times bigger than those with an alarm system.

So, to prevent false alarms and the lost of credibility of the system, considering that the users are the biggest causers, it is the installing and monitoring companies obligation to realize trainings that will show the user the proper handling of the system, including the necessity of changing the way they act, so that they prevent the lack of communication with their monitoring center.
